Submarine paint blistering from tanker fire

Postby Nisgeis on Sat Feb 20, 2010 12:45 pm

Hi Guys,

I'm trying to remember which US sub in WWII it was that sailed so close to a tanker that was on fire, that the paint started to blister from the intense heat. I've seen a painting of it, but I can't find it now. Anyone any ideas?

The only sub with blistering paint that immediately comes to mind is the Seadragon after raid on Cavite by the Japanese.

But what you decribe is vaguely familiar. I'll keep digging.

One of the silent service history channel documentary's has a breif interview by a crewman who said just that about the paint blistering. I think its the one episode on google video ive linked to a dozen times.

Thanks Ducimus, I'll have a look through those videos. Google isn't being my friend at the moment. 'Tanker, fire and submarine' appear in LOTS of articles and paint blistering added in just gives random stuff. Scorched paint gives the Tang... I think it's one of the 'famous' subs and I think she may have been lost during the war. This is annoying.

I think it was only like a breif segment (more like a passing mention) in this one.

Offhand, i think it was the USS growler the caption said the guy was from. Torpedoman i think.

Wow, that's actually got the artist shown painting the picture I was looking for  . Unfortunately, even though I know he's called Tom Freeman and I've been to his website, I can't find the darned painting! The torpedoman who talks about the paint peeling is from the USS Growler, but the painting, the artist says is the USS Harder. I'm close, but still no cigar.
