Aircraft contacts with no map contacts on

Postby Nisgeis on Fri Jul 23, 2010 1:20 pm

So with the radar mod allowing people to accurately track targets without havng to have map contacts on, a new problem has arisen. Aircraft do not show up on the SJ radar, so with map contacts off, there is no warning that it is an aircraft. All you get is a blank scope and no range information.

The two ways I can think of to fix this are:

1. Increase the max height of the SJ radar so it displays aircraft as well. There is no way to get a range only with no bearing, but you get range and bearing with map contacts on as well. Plus it's sort of semi realistic when you get SV radar later, but of course this means that the visible interactive 'air' radar could have a range less than the actual air radar, leading again to contacts reported but not appearing. With the interactive radar you could determine if the contact was an aaircraft manually by seeing what speed it was doing.

2. Remove all ship blob icons on the nav map and replace them with blanks, so they do not show up even with map contacts on and leave aircraft targets to show up. It means a quick check of the nav map would be the first order of the day when a contact is reported and a determination made if it's an aircraft.

Any thoughts on this?

No 2. Is easy. and is just simple editing of graphic files.

I've already done something similar to this, only in reverse. I have Air contacts NOT showing up on the map when they get within a certain range. Idea being nobody can plot a target THAT fast. So, I blanked the icon out.

If you want to observe this in action, just load TMO on a map with aircraft. I acutally goofed, i left a tiny pixel in the aircraft blank, so if you look closely you can see a little "dirt" moving.

The icons your looking for (aside from the SHP files in the data/air and data/sea dirctories) i believe reside in the data/menu directory somewhere.

Only problem with this, is this modification is permanent. Done in the desired manner for your uses, Map contacts are wont display, period.

No 2.
I dunno.. i'll have to think about this more. At work Atm. Running an experiment to see if its feasible before making a decision couldn't hurt. You'd have to acutally. Given SJ rotation's, and overlap of SJ and SD.
Meh.
Doo wah diddy diddy dum ditty do.
